Tutoring Update - Contacted the Student

I contacted my student today, who was assigned to me by Hawaii Literacy. We agreed to meet at McDonalds on Thursday night to get to know each other. We'll see how it goes. The student is an older guy so I'm not sure how he'll react to a younger person tutoring him. I'm not sure this is a right fit, but I'll go in with an open mind and see what happens.

While I'm not at liberty to discuss him at length, I have to admit that I don't really know much about him at this point. I was told that he is an ordained minister and is interested in learning to read the Bible. I'm not sure how he can be a minister and not know how to read. I'll have to ask him about it. He has had some drug issues in the past so I hope they are resolved. I was also told that he has other health problems.

I'm a little intimidated about meeting him, but I guess it should be okay. I don't really feel confident about being a tutor after only four days of training. It all seems so unprofessional. How can you let an untrained person take control of someone else's education? I know we're just helping them to read, but it still seems pretty weird that we're not trained.

Cut the Fat

Inspired by Operation Muffin Top(ple), I've decided to sign up for an account at Live Strong, a site that promotes a healthy lifestyle. It's backed by Lance Armstrong and his people. This hopefully means that the articles and support from the site will be inspirational and informative at the same time.

By joining the site, I hope I'll be able to track my food intake better. I already know I have bad eating habits, but maybe seeing them in front of my face will allow me to finally make the changes I need to eat better and live healthier.

Eventually, I hope this will give me a fighting chance at fulfilling #85 on my Bucket List. Then, a few months (but more realistically years) down the line, I'll be confident enough to work on #82.

I'll let ya know how everything goes, but if you want to keep tabs on your own you can view my Live Strong profile. There isn't much there yet, but it's always nice to have friends.

Self-Imposed Hunger Strike

Well, it's not really a hunger strike, but it is self-imposed and it does feel like a hunger strike.

My co-worker and I decided to do salads for lunch because this is a healthy alternative to plate lunches or fast food. In theory, this is a very good idea (especially since I would definitely welcome the loss of a pound or two or twenty), but in practice it feels like I'm on some kind of hunger strike and it's only been two days.

Knowing full well that I'll be having salad for lunch, I've even gotten up early to eat some breakfast. Yes, cereal is still considered a meal (at any time of day) even after graduating from college. As a treat to myself, I don't buy the healthy stuff. I stick to the good old fashioned sugary cereals like Apple Jacks or Cocoa Krispies.

Still, by the time I come into work, check my email and read the blogs on The Advertiser site I'm starving. When lunchtime finally arrives, I'm greeted with a heaping pile of greens. Yum (and I type this in the most sarcastic way possible)! Anyone who knows me knows that I hate veggies so you know salad lunches are just making my day.

I'm not sure how much longer I'll be able to do this (mind you, I'm on day two right now). Also, if you think I don't snack in between meals, guess again. Even with snacking I'm still hungry. What gives?
